School Services Designed to Assist Schools to create healthier student environments and come into compliance with the Federal “Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities Act” (SDFSCA)

SDFSCA Requirements:

1.  Programs funded under SDFSCA will be based on an assessment of objective data regarding the         incidence of violence and illegal drug use in the elementary schools and secondary schools       and communities to be served.
Services offered to meet this requirement:
Provide data collection support for schools including:
  • School data – What data is collected and how is it collected, what information can be gleaned from it, how can their data collection process be improved.
  • Finding and using available archival community data.
  • Information on several student surveys, including implementation costs. If requested, assist schools in choosing a survey that matches their need.
  • Other data collection methods such as key informant surveys/interviews, focus groups, community needs assessments, etc.

2.  Programs funded under SDFSCA will be based on an established set of performance measures     aimed at ensuring that the elementary schools and secondary schools and communities to be              served have a safe, orderly, and drug-free learning environment.
Services offered to meet this requirement:
  • Assist schools in designing performance measures that are tailored to meet the needs of their school/district, based on available data and meeting SDFSCA requirements.

3.  Programs funded under SDFSCA will be based on scientifically based research demonstrating that the program to be used will reduce violence and illegal drug use.
Services offered to meet this requirement:
Based on data, interests and performance measures, assist schools/districts to choose evidence-based programs that best meet their needs and environment. Discuss innovations, adaptations as well as model programs.  All adaptations and innovations will be based on core prevention concepts, and proven strategies.

4.  Programs funded under SDFSCA be based on an analysis of the data reasonably available at the time, of the prevalence of risk factors, including high or increasing rates of reported cases of child abuse and domestic violence; protective factors, buffers, assets; or other variables identified through scientifically based research that occur in schools and communities.
Services offered to meet this requirement:
  • Provide and support in-district data analysis, including identification of risk/protective factors, developmental assets and tailor performance measures to counter risk factors and increase assets/protective factors.

5.  Include meaningful and ongoing consultation with and input from parents in the development of the application and administration of the program or activity.
Services offered to meet this requirement:
  • Guide development of parent/school community involvement plan that includes key stakeholder groups, especially parents and students in the planning, development and implementation phases of SDFS programs.
